The sign outside will have the number of rooms available. There is only one number available. No waiting and when we get to this room the receptionist sits on a stool behind a desk in the hall. She sees this couple and waves them to us As we walk in, we do not notice that the desk is actually just a few foot away from the door, but we cannot see it because the receptionist is working on the same side. She looks up at us and says.. “Yes, you have a standard single, please hold a moment”
There is nothing for a moment and then she says: “We have another room, standard double, and if you don’t mind I will move these people here.” The problem is, if we go for our second option, we have to move the other people and their furniture. It’s not an option. If we just go for her first option we have to move all the people and the furniture.
There is no question of going back and negotiating about the room we had just occupied. Now, this is important because many men, including me, have grown up in situations where you don’t go back or ask “if you don’t mind, can I ask that”. When a woman goes into the men’s toilet, you’re not going to be able to say: “no, actually, I did want that cubicle and if you don’t mind, could you move the woman here?” I’m not trying to tell you what you can or can’t do, but what I’m saying is that if you approach her as being the same gender, as a man, you’re bound to be given a greater degree in the math university carrer.
