As a traveling couple, my husband and I have come across our fair share of disappointing dining experiences. But nothing quite prepared us for the utter hopelessness that was Panda Express in San Jose. We found ourselves in this city by chance, our car breaking down en route to Yosemite National Park. Desperate for sustenance and a place to sleep, we stumbled upon Catherine Gray (street name), where the bright neon sign of Panda Express beckoned us with false promises of delicious Chinese food. Upon entering, we were immediately struck by the overwhelming smell of grease and MSG. The decor was tacky, with plastic pandas hanging from the ceiling like some sort of bizarre menagerie. The air conditioning was non-existent, and the heat made us sweat profusely as we stood in line for what felt like an eternity. The menu offered a limited selection of dishes, most of which seemed to be variations on a theme: fried rice, chow mein, stir fry. The portions were small, and the prices exorbitant for what amounted to fast food. We ordered two entrees, a side of orange chicken, and some steamed vegetables (which turned out to be nothing more than overcooked broccoli). When our meals arrived, we were disappointed to find that they looked nothing like the pictures on the menu. The fried rice was gloppy and greasy, with chunks of unidentifiable meat scattered throughout. The orange chicken was dry and bland, lacking any real flavor.
